From Black Rock to the World

This is a fundraiser for a film about Burning Man, an event that became a major movement impacting the world.

Burning Man: A Countercultural Phenomenon

Over the past 25 years, Burning Man has evolved from a small gathering on a beach in San Francisco to a countercultural phenomenon in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, an annual pilgrimage drawing more than 50,000 people from every corner of the globe.

The event takes its name from the ritual burning of a wooden effigy. But for many of participants the event is defined by power of creativity, the joy of self-expression and the freedom to continually renew and reinvent yourself.

Burning Man is evolved from a weeklong party in the desert to a vibrant and visionary community, one that is redefining the meaning of public art, community design, and social capital.

Today, its influence is spreading around the world, inspiring similar gatherings as far afield as Europe, Australia and South Africa.

Burning Man: Phénomène de contreculture

Véritable phénomène de société, Burning Man est à l’origine une proposition immédiate (la crémation d’un mannequin en bois en hommage au solstice d’été) devenue évènement underground (sur la plage de Baker Beach à San Francisco) puis festival transformatif et enfin un mouvement en perpétuelle évolution.

Burning Man s’inscrit dans la lignée de ces courants libertaires de la Beat Génération et du flower power … Eux aussi nés à San Francisco, cette ville de Californie où l’on vient se réinventer.La migration annuelle à Black Rock City dans le Nevada (plus de 60 000 personnes cette année) transforme ses citoyens durablement depuis plus d’un quart de siècle. Réseau social avant l’heure, Burning Man s’est développé de façon exponentielle et se répand désormais dans le monde.

A Personal Journey

I discovered Burning Man in the summer of 2002. Still grieving from the death of my father, I encountered the charismatic California sculptor David Best at the event. He is known for his breathtaking ephemeral temples honoring departed loved ones. For me, his vision turned out to be both inspiring and deeply cathartic.

A native of France, I have lived in California for the past 15 years. I have attended Burning Man the last ten years, producing a number of films, including “Sensation: A Trip to Burning Man,” “Voyage in Utopia” and “A Frenchman in the States,” a documentary series for French television, one episode of which takes place in the ephemeral metropolis of Black Rock City.

En 2002, empêtré dans l’impossible deuil de mon père, je découvre Burning Man pour la première fois et rencontre David Best, un sculpteur californien charismatique qui construit des temples éphémères dédiés aux êtres chers disparus… Rien ne sera plus jamais comme avant.

Né en France, je vis en Californie depuis 15 ans et depuis 10 ans, je participe à Burning Man en produisant mes films: “Sensation, a trip to Burning Man”,“Burning man, Voyage in Utopia”, “A Frenchman in the states at burning Man”… J’encourage tous les gens que j’aime à vivre cette expérience: ma femme Sandrine qui produit avec moi ces films, notre fils de 8 ans Lhassa (6 fois burner!), ma mère, mes amis dont Greg, cadreur et monteur de mes films.

An Ambitious New Documentary

This year we’re producing an ambitious new film about Burning Man, one that captures the exquisite poetry of the event, its massive American scale, and its burgeoning appeal around the world. The feature-length documentary will offer viewers a high-definition immersion into the art, creativity and growing influence of Burning Man.

Our crew consists of three cameramen, two sound engineers, and three production assistants. They will be joined by philosopher and Stanford University lecturer Michel Serres will offer his views on the broader social and cultural ramifications of Burning Man.

Un documentaire ambitieux

Fort de cette expérience avec cette équipe, nous allons cette année produire un film ambitieux qui dépeindra à la fois la poésie de l’évènement, son envergure massive toute américaine et sa portée désormais internationale: Un documentaire de 90 minutes en HD qui embrassera dans sa globalité le phénomène, de sa stupéfiante créativité à son impact dans le monde réel.

Hormis deux cadreurs supplémentaires, deux ingénieurs du son et des assistants de production, le philosophe et académicien français Michel Serres, conférencier à l’université de Stanford remettra quant à lui en perspective les thèmes et les questionnements d’une humanité qui ne peut s’empêcher de créer.

Characters

But at its heart, the film is about the people of Black Rock City — the freethinking artists, dancers, performers, DJs, musicians, designers, and exhibitionists of every stripe. Who are these people and what inspires them to return to the event year after year? Who are the organizers? What guides and motivates all their work to make it all happen behind the scenes?

The film also spotlights some of the key figures who have helped Burning Man become what it is—from visionary founder Larry Harvey to artist and temple-builder David Best to architect and ecologist Eugene Tsui.

In addition to interviews and footage shot on location at Burning Man, the film also documents a number of “regional events,” including those in Mormon communities of Utah, South Africa’s Afrika Burn, and the Nowhere festival in Spain.

Personnages

Ce sont eux le coeur de notre film. Ces gens qui accomplissent des choses folles, parfois déraisonnables en réaction au conformisme ambiant, qui imaginent ces oeuvres d’art dans le plus grand musée interactif du monde. Ce sont aussi ces gens qui décident de décider de leur propre vie après avoir été exposés au phénomène. Qui sont-ils ces artistes, ces participants, cette organisation, ces burners … ? Cette communauté que guide l’utopie.

Les Américains que nous allons rencontrer incarnent quant à eux l’utopie à une échelle inédite: Que ce soit de la pratique de la spiritualité selon l’artiste David Best, faiseur de temples et sauveur de vies, la vision de Larry Harvey créateur de Burning Man, l’écologie avant-gardiste de Eugene Tsui, architecte visionnaire … Mais aussi les “regional events” qui voient le jour un peu partout dans le monde, des communautés de mormons de l’Utah à l’Afrikaburn en Afrique du sud, du festival Nowhere en Espagne au Royaume-Uni en passant par la France.

Car l’évènement annuel de Burning Man agit comme un déclencheur qui inspire le reste de l’année des associations actives et vivantes dans les domaines du lobbying, de l’écologie, du lien social, de l’éducation et de la culture … Nous allons aussi rencontrer les acteurs de ce mouvement désormais international.

In order to make this film possible, we must raise $60,000 before August 6, 2012. The budget will go toward production costs associated with bringing our crew to Burning Man in 2012, filming at three regional events, and bringing a world-class editor onto our team to help us cut the film together.
