David Best saved my life in this unlikely desert. The encounter with his art, and his heart, allowed me to restart my life, I’ve decided to make films again. My “Voyage in Utopia” was a new start also. And this year I am honored to film his new temple : the temple of Juno.

We have talked about it on La French TV. Burning Man is an event that takes place in Black Rock City in the Nevada desert, and brings together nearly 60,000 participants each year. The right word is “experience.” An artistic, human experience, where there is freedom of expression and emotion. Experience difficult to describe, in the end, and the best way to understand Burning Man, without going there, is to see images. 10 years ago, we had filmed “Voyage in Utopia“, a film that tells the story of Burning Man. It was on this occasion that the film’s director, Laurent Le Gall, is a very special meeting in the desert. The meeting will be especially significant for him.

David Best, an American artist who creates temples with salvaged materials, especially for this gathering, and for the past 12 years. When in 2003 followed by Laurent, David Best , dedicated his temple to honor “the Temple of Honor.” It actually creates a gathering place where we can honor our passed loved ones . These temples are dedicated to no gods, no religion, they are nevertheless a kind of sanctuary, open to all – regardless of beliefs or non beliefs – with one purpose: to issue, or the relief, following the loss of someone we loved. At the end of seven days during which Burning Man takes place, David Best’s temple was burned, leaving the empty desert of all traces of the event. But “the man who burns” like a Phoenix rising from the ashes every year. In 2012, David Best aims to recreate a temple. The theme of Burning Man this year is “2.0 Fertility,” David Best has decided to dedicate his work to the woman giving the name “Temple of Juno,” the goddess of fertility.

David Best works with a team of volunteers, it nevertheless needs funds to realize his artistic project. The Black rock desert, Nevada State, will be the decor of the festival. Without a doubt the experience will be extreme in this lost world. huge heat, desert storms, no shade, no shops. According to Larry Harvey, the principals are simple. Radical self expression and creation are absolute. No money here. All is based on a gift economy ! At Burning Man you will not find any fast food or advertising for beer.

The purpose of this documentary, through our extraordinary voyage, is to analyse the conventions, commitments and syndromes of this event became a mouvement.

Burning Man is a schizophrenic testimony of an american society where liberty, tolerance and individualism often live side by side with competition, totalitarianism and commodification. It will illuminate for us the hidden face of “the man who burns”.
